  • I have been a member at St Marks for over 30 years. If you love liturgy, yearn for a church family environment, and believe that all people are children of God and should be welcomed as such, please visit us at St. Mark's. We would love to meet you.

  • A little weird for the average Christian. I enjoy that they showcase different religions. However outside the grcc smokers congregate on the front steps. The church itself is beautiful

  • Earlier today we tried a church near our new apartment and were surprised at how divisive and militant the pastor and congregation of that location was to us.
St. Mark's was the exact opposite of the first experience today, and falls neatly into the calming, peaceful environment we were seeking today.
Having participated in several denominations over the years, I will say that St Marks has a relatively easy to follow process, but lacks the seeker friendly atmosphere for new attendees. Much of this Church's tradition revolves around the concept that learning and understanding the practices and processes is done on your own time. That's not how new seekers learn about religion these days though. It would help, tremendously, if there was a dedicated narrative presented to the audience to guide people and educate them about the practices as they are happening. The environment of quiet, peaceful meditation is great; but it can be confusingly still at times leading new attendees to think that the leaders forgot what they were doing next. We'll be giving it another go this coming week, but have commitments elsewhere for the summer.

  • St. Mark's offers not just a beautiful, moving liturgy, but active opportunities for service and education. It has been my spiritual home for many years now. When I first visited as a single person new to the area, long-term members greeted me at coffee hour, and the liturgy and music have remained moving over time. When I asked what I could offer, I learned of ministries that needed time and energy, and this work has deepened my spiritual growth. My sons are currently developing in their faith through Christian Formation, and it's been a delight to see more and more young people active as Acolytes and in other service projects.

“Jesus loves me, but he can’t stand you” is the unofficial motto of St. Mark’s. Like some other mainline Protestant churches in west Michigan, the congregational leadership seems to view St. Mark’s as an extension of a local country club, where some level of arbitrary rejection of others is necessary to make their membership meaningful. Apart from tokens of diversity, the overwhelmingly white congregation drives in to the city each Sunday from suburban communities such as East Grand Rapids, Cascade, and Ada. My experience at St. Mark’s might be unusual —— last year I was refused communion by a layperson, who must have thought I didn’t meet St. Mark’s standards —— but I have heard from many others with similar experiences. To be fair, St. Mark’s hosts a relatively large Sunday morning breakfast for homeless persons, but even the organization of these events and St. Mark’s ’God is love’ rainbow flag are accompanied by an odd, smugly self-satisfied attitude. I would not recommend St. Mark’s to others in Grand Rapids.
